what is it like being a BS Math?

look at their faces!!!

Definitions of Terms Commonly Used in Math (humor)

CLEARLY: I don't want to write down all the in-between steps.

TRIVIAL: If I have to show you how to do this, you're in the wrong class.

OBVIOUSLY: I hope you weren't sleeping when we discussed this earlier, because I refuse to repeat it.

RECALL: I shouldn't have to tell you this, but for those of you who erase your memory tapes after every test, here it is again.

WITHOUT LOSS OF GENERALITY: I'm not about to do all the possible cases, so I'll do one and let you figure out the rest.

ONE MAY SHOW: One did, his name was Gauss.

IT IS WELL KNOWN: See "Mathematische Zeitschrift'', vol XXXVI, 1892.

CHECK FOR YOURSELF: This is the boring part of the proof, so you can do it on your own time.

SKETCH OF A PROOF: I couldn't verify the details, so I'll break it down into parts I couldn't prove.

HINT: The hardest of several possible ways to do a proof.

BRUTE FORCE: Four special cases, three counting arguments, two long inductions, and a partridge in a pair tree.

SOFT PROOF: One third less filling (of the page) than your regular proof, but it requires two extra years of course work just to understand the terms.

ELEGANT PROOF: Requires no previous knowledge of the subject, and is less than ten lines long.

SIMILARLY: At least one line of the proof of this case is the same as before.

CANONICAL FORM: 4 out of 5 mathematicians surveyed recommended this as the final form for the answer.

THE FOLLOWING ARE EQUIVALENT: If I say this it means that, and if I say that it means the other thing, and if I say the other thing...

BY A PREVIOUS THEOREM: I don't remember how it goes (come to think of it, I'm not really sure we did this at all), but if I stated it right, then the rest of this follows.

TWO LINE PROOF: I'll leave out everything but the conclusion.

BRIEFLY: I'm running out of time, so I'll just write and talk faster.

LET'S TALK THROUGH IT: I don't want to write it on the board because I'll make a mistake.

PROCEED FORMALLY: Manipulate symbols by the rules without any hint of their true meaning.

QUANTIFY: I can't find anything wrong with your proof except that it won't work if x is 0.

FINALLY: Only ten more steps to go...

Q.E.D. : T.G.I.F. (Thank God It's Finish)

PROOF OMITTED: Trust me, it's true.

Top 10 Things That Math and Sex Have in Common

Top 10 Things That Math and Sex Have in Common

10. Explicit discussions of either topic is a faux pas at most cocktail parties.
9. Historically, men have been in control, but there are now efforts to get women more involved.
8. There are many joint results.
7. Both are prominent on college campuses, and are usually practiced indoors.
6. Most people wish they knew more about both subjects.
5. Both involve long and hard problems, and can produce interesting topology and geometry.
4. Both merit undivided attention, but mathematicians are prone to think about one while doing the other.
3. Saint Augustine was hostile to both, and Alan Turing took an unusual approach to both.
2. Both typically begin with a lot of hard work and end with a great but brief reward.
1. Professionals are generally viewed with suspicion, and most do not earn high pay.

A Little Math Humor

This has been going around the 'net, but thought I'd share it, in case you hadn't seen it before. It is pretty funny.

quotable quotes (math edition)

"But there is another reason for the high repute of mathematics: it is mathematics that offers the exact natural sciences a certain measure of security which, without mathematics, they could not attain." - Albert Einstein

"A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there." - Charles Darwin

"A Mathematician is someone who can take a cup of coffee and turn it into a theory." - Paul Erdos

i will be presenting my SP in MSP 2007 Convention

na-approve ang abstract ng aking SP ng mga organizers ng Mathematical Society of the Philippines

I will be presenting my Special Problem in the MSP Convention...

gaganapin ito sa May 18-19, 2007 sa Bohol...

ang saya-saya!!!
kaka-ibang experience ito!!!!!!!

well, big thanks to my adviser for giving us this opportunity

teaching career

well, i think that i will accept their offer..

nag-dadalawang isip pa ako nung una, kasi parang gusto ko mag-apply sa IT companies...

well, anu ba naman ang laban ko sa mga applicants with honors at hindi pa ako nakakasiguro na matatanggap nga ako...

sa Math Division, i think sure ball na yun... kasi nangangailangan sila ng 11 new faculty members...

hayy.... good luck sa aking career...

and my decision is final, nalinawan na ako, magtuturo nga ako...

well, siguro hindi naman ito forever... baka after 1 year at hindi ko pa balak mag-MS, baka mag-apply na lang ako ng ibang work....

well, good luck na lang sa akin...

buhay LB, bilang estudyante ng UP....

Iskolar ng Bayan, Bagong Pag-asa ng Bayan
Tunay, Palaban, Makabayan….

Peste! May exam pa kinabukasan.
Math 11, 14, 17, 26, 27, 28, 36, 37, 101
isang estudyante
Maliban na lang sa mga mathematically
inclined
Hay, di pa tapos ang penitensya, meron pa!
Chem lec at lab, Chem 15, 16, 17, 32,
40, atbp, hayyyy…
Bot lab, Zoo lab, At magsasaulo pa ng
daan-daang scientific names

Mahirap maging estudyante sa UP,
oras
Kahit 10mins before time na, 20mins pa

nag-uuwian
Calamba, San Pablo, Biñan, Cabuyao
Dahil sa tindi ng trapik sa Anos! Sa
Junction!
At ang nakakapang-asar pa eh yung mga
sugapang driver ng nasakyan mong jeep,
Na tinitigilan na nga lahat ng nakatayo
sa kalye eh pagong naman sa tulin

Buhay LB, masaya kapag madaming activities
Concert, Feb Fair, Palacasan,
Cemplangan, EngMeet
Kapag may mga plays, minsan required,
hayyyy ang gastos! Pero masaya
Minsan trip mo lang manood, baka you’ll
miss half of your life
Buhay LB, mahirap ilarawan, maraming
karanasan

salamat, at ako'y makakatapos na...

MSP 2007

it is a great feeling that my special problem is forwarded to the Mathematical Society of the Philippines for the Convention in May2007 in Bohol

hope that the council will accept my paper, hope to be one of the few chosen people that will present their paper in the convention, i know it is a different experience and privilege if my paper will be approved

my Special Problem:

"TERNARY IMAGES OF LINEAR BLOCK CODES OVER RINGS OF ORDER 9"

got to be cleared

it was a long journey...

our expedition to the challenging world of mathematics is about to end

four years is not enough to know mathematics well
but hell yeah, we've known a lot compared to other people

now, the time is about to come

and the 'clearance' is in our hands.
tomorrow will be the last day for clearing ourselves in the academe
and soon to follow is the graduation and i am so happy
