On June 18, 2008, UPLB will mark the 100th founding anniversary of the University of the Philippines with series of activities slated for that day.
The day will start with UP Centennial Commemorative Tree Planting at 6:30am along Silangan Road. Dr. Fernando C. Sanchez, chair of Landscaping Management Committee, will lead this activity. Simultaneous with this, the Office of Student Affairs thru its Student Organization and Activities Division will treat the UP Centennial Freshmen with “Almusalan” at S.U. Amphitheater.
At 8:30am, there will be an Opening Convocation for New Students at Baker Hall. Around 1,900 freshmen will be welcomed by the Administration officials together with the deans of the various colleges of UPLB.
A little over in the afternoon, at 3pm, the Committee on Heritage Trees together with select UPLB officials will unveil the markers of 12 heritage trees that were identified under the UPLB Heritage Tree project to celebrate the UP Centennial. The project envisions to mark in different campuses of UP, representative trees that would symbolize UP’s legacy to the area and community. Meantime, various student organizations will assemble at 3pm near the Oblation to usher the New Students as they march to Baker Hall.
To cap the day’s commemoration of UP’s 100 years, homegrown talents will spice up the night of the new students of UPLB as they gyrate to the music of live band or sing along with crooners featured at a concert at 6pm at Baker Hall. (Emy S. Mariveles)
