DANTAONG DALUYAN NG KAMALAYAN

Springing forth from the birth of a college pioneering in agriculture and forestry, the consciousness for servant leadership was nurtured with the blossoming of the sciences, technology, the arts and the humanities; inured and deepened through the dark days of the First Quarter Storm; and continues to flow to reckon the challenges of today. UP Los Baños upholds excellence in critical and creative thinking, yielding outstanding educators, researchers, scientists and extension workers. The Oblation is a constant reminder of the call to stand in solidarity with the Filipino people, a passionate offering of all that we are for the cause of nation-building.

(music and lyrics by Prof. Alleli C. Domingo, Deputy Director of IMSP)

I.

Sa duyan ng Makiling

Ang kakayaha’y nalinang

Butil ng dunong yumabong

Malikhaing isip kuminang.

Lumago sining at agham, Iskolar ng Bayan

Nahasa pananaliksik at kaalaman

Inani’y karangalan, madla’y nakinabang

Diwang-Oblation, adhikang taglay.

O, Pamantasan ng Pilipinas

Paglingkuran mo sambayanan

Palaganapin ang kahusayan

Isapamuhay kadakilaan.

II.

Sa pagdaan ng unos

Paghihinagpis ay lubos

Ang pangitai’y nanimdim

Kalikasa’y tigib ng dilim.

Umugong tangis at taghoy ng kabataan

Katarungan, katuwiran pinanindigan

Uyayi sa lansangan, kapwa’y ipinaglaban

Ipinamalas kabayanihan.

O, Pamantasan ng Pilipinas

Huwag talikuran tawag ng bayan

Ipamahagi ang karunungan

At pagyamanin kapuluan

III.

Isulong ang kapakanan ng mamamayan

Pag-asang dulot ng giting ng pinagmulan

Hangad na kaunlaran ating makakamtan

Mabawi ang ningas ng kasaysayan.

O, Pamantasan ng Pilipinas

Huwag talikuran tawag ng bayan

Ipamahagi ang karunungan

At pagyamanin kapuluan!

/be FAMOUS, /be INDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

woohhooooo!!! tagal ko nang pinlano to, na pagsamasamahin ang "inday" messages... until may nagsend sa akin nito... hayy... medyo putol pa ang story... to be continued....

_______________________

Kaya mo
ba ang lahat ng ito?

Inday: I believe that my trained skills and expertise in management
with the use of standard tools, and my discipline and experience will
contribute significantly to the value of the work that you want, my
creativity, productivity and work-efficiency and the high quality of
outcomes I can offer will boost the work progress.

Amo: [nosebleed]

Amo: Bakit me bukol si junior?

Inday: Compromising safety with useless aesthetics, the not-so-well
engineered architectural design of our kitchen lavatory affected the
boy's cranium with a slight boil at the left temple near the auditory organ.

Amo: [nosebleed ulit]

Kinagabihan, habang naghahapunan.

Amo: Bakit maalat ang ulam?

Inday: The consistency was fine. But you see, it seems that the
increased amount of sodium chloride (NaCl) affected the taste
drastically and those actions are irreversible. I do apologize.

Inday: Because I don't want you to see me doing absolutely nothing.

Donya: [hinimatay]

Inday: It's absurd! It was never a fact that he will inflict a fight.

I can only imagine how you handle schizophrenic kids on this
educational institution. Revise your policies because they suck!

Principal: [nag resign]

Inday: A change in the weather patterns might have occurred
wrecking havoc to the surroundings. The way the debris are scattered
indicates that the gust of wind was going northeast causing damage
to the path it was heading for.

Amo: [nosebleed ulit]

Inday: Stop your raucous behavior. It is bound to result in
property damages and if that happens there will be corresponding
punishment to be inflicted upon you!

Nabalitaan nya
umalis si Angel Locsin sa GMA 7.

Junior: Bakit kaya sya umalis?

Inday: Sometimes, people choose to leave not because of selfish
reasons but because they just know that things will get worse if
they'll stay. Leaving can be a tough act, and it's harder when
people can't understand you for doing so.

Junior: [tuloy ang pagdugo ng ilong]

Nung gabing yon, me nag text ke Inday. Si Dodong, ang driver
ng kapitbahay, gusto maki pag text-mate.

Inday: To forestall further hopes of acquaintance, my unfathomable
statement to the denial of your request - Petition denied.

Inday: The statute restricts me to love you but you have the
provocations. The way you smile is the proximate cause why I
love you. We have some rules to think of. We have no vested rights to
love each other because the upper household dismissed my petition!"

Dodong: Perhaps you are mistaken, what you seem to contrive as
any affections for you are somewhat half-hearted. I was merely
attempting to expand my network of interests by involving you in my daily
recreation. Heretofor, you can expect an end to any verbal articulation from myself"

quote unquote "new" craze in town

The UPLB campus is now being filled by people (students/teachers) solving the "Rubik's Cube".

the Rubik's cube being part of contests in recreational mathematics is now being a"new" craze in town... students are getting more involved in solving such mind boggling puzzle...

and it's a cool thing for other people to solve this cube

UPCAT tips

exam day mo yan hahanapin.

4. pumunta ng UP 2-3 hours bago pa

More UPCAT tips:
1. Matulog ng maaga.
2. Wag na magdala ng maraming pagkain.
Ni hindi nga ako nakainom nung ng-
UPCAT ako eh. hehe...
3. Wag na mag-cram sa pag-aaral. Tama
na yung napag-aralan mo ng 3 years.
4. Yung UPCAT last year madali lang
kung ihahambing sa mga nakaraang taon
sapagkat binubuo lamang ito ng 4 na
parte - ang reading comprehension,
verbal ability, science (karamihan
earth science), at math.
5. Pray.

eto galing kay kevin, na student ko..
"wag masyado dibdibin ang upcat.. baka
bumaba ang tingin nyo sa sarili nyo
kapag hindi kayo nakapasa.. no

basahin mabuti ang mga directions at
instructions. tsaka dapat maalam
sumunod sa simpleng instructions. ok?

Rationale

The University has been gearing up for its Centennial in 2008. Preparations include projects that are reflective of the University’s niches, culture of excellence, diversity and distinctiveness.

One of the goals of the Centennial is to create opportunities for different university constituents to participate in the celebration. UPLB’s Centennial Theme Song Competition and Concert, is a venue where students, faculty, staff, alumni and other constituents can help the students and faculty to raise funds for their welfare.

This music fest will feature the entries for the UPLB Centennial Theme Song Composition Contest that mirror UPLB talents in song composition. Also, this will serve as a showcase of the different talents that UPLB has. Overall, the music fest is a benefit show meant to raise funds for two of the Centennial Fund Campaign projects - Faculty Development Fund and the Scholarship Fund for Undergraduate and Graduate Students.

Through this music fest, the University will be able to have a song that will unify its constituents as we celebrate this milestone. Also, the proceeds of this activity will leave a legacy to the faculty and students who will benefit from the projects that the university has put up for them.

This is not just a song composition contest. It is also a time to reveal our distinctiveness not just in science and technology but also in music and the arts. Lastly, it is an opportunity for every constituent to be part of this grand celebration that only happens once in our lifetime.

2 math experts to teach teachers

By Jonathan Hicap , Reporter

http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2007/june/09/yehey/top_stories/20070609top9.html

TWO world-renowned mathematicians will be arriving in the country to train Filipino math teachers and enhance their skills through innovative approaches.

The Mathematics Trainers' Guild-Philippines (MTG) said Dr. Andy Liu, a professor at the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences of the University of Alberta in Canada, and Professor Wen-Hsien Sun of the Chiu Chang Mathematics Education Foundation in Taiwan would be conducting workshops on "Enhancing Competencies in Teaching Mathematics through Innovative Approaches."

The seminar-workshop will be held at St. Jude Catholic School for Metro Manila participants on June 14; Colegio San Agustin in Biñan, Laguna, on June 15 for participants from Laguna and nearby provinces; and Bayanihan Tarlac Institute on June 16 for participants from Tarlac and nearby areas.

Liu and Sun will also train Filipino students that will compete in international math competitions that are scheduled this year in Singapore, Hong Kong and China.

Liu has won many awards for his university teaching and work in mathematics education. He is the recipient of the MAA Tepper Haimo Teaching Award, Adrien Pouliot award from the Canadian Mathematics Society, 3M Teaching Fellowship, the outstanding Educator Award of the Ontario Institute for the Study of Education and was the CASE/CCAE Canadian University Professor of the Year. In 2003, Liu led the Canadian team in winning in the International Mathematics Olympiad held in Japan.

Sun was the recipient of the prestigious Paul Erdos Award for mathematics in 2002 given by the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions (WFNMC).

MTG President Dr. Simon Chua, a Filipino, won the award last year.

Sun is credited for introducing the International Mathematics Olympiad to Taiwanese students. He has trained students participating in IMO competitions. His foundation supports local activities and puzzle competitions.

More information on the seminar-workshop is available from Rechilda Villame at 0917-8105009; Elmer Apistar at 0920-4339224; or Engineer Edgardo Domingo at 0917-5148789.

Senate OK's UP charter change as National U

By Efren L. Danao, Senior Reporter

http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2007/june/06/yehey/top_stories/20070606top6.html

The Senate ratified Tuesday the bicameral conference committee report amending the University of the Philippines charter by strengthening UP as The National University.

The new UP charter is the very first measure approved by the Senate as it holds its last two session days before adjourning sine die today, June 6.

Senate Majority Leader Francis Pangilinan, head of the Senate panel, said the new UP charter makes the UP board of regents more autonomous, exempts the UP faculty from the salary standardization law and states categorically the tax-exempt status of all revenues and assets, donations and importation related to its educational function. All academic awards will also be tax-exempt.

"There are many state universities at the moment. With this new charter, UP will be The National University," he said.

Pangilinan said that exempting the faculty from the salary standardization law would enable UP to maintain high-quality professors. He noted that the comparatively low pay of professors has made them seek higher paying positions elsewhere.

"Professors at the Ateneo are receiving two times the salary of equivalent UP professors; those from La Salle are receiving three times," he said.

He cited the greater autonomy of the UP board of regents as a key feature of the new UP charter.

"It limits the appointing power of the Philippine president. The student regent will now be selected by the students themselves, and the faculty regent, by the faculty members," he explained.

Public schools are tax exempt but the legislators decided to make that of UP categorical through its charter.

"Public schools are not supposed to pay taxes, but the government bureaucracy has different interpretations on tax exemptions," he said.

The new UP charter states that importation of economic, technical, vocational, scientific, philosophical, historical and cultural books, supplies and materials duly certified by the board of regents, including scientific and education computer and software equipment, shall be exempt from customs duties.

There had been several attempts in previous Congresses to amend the UP Charter but not succeeded, until now.

The ratification of the bicameral conference committee report came on the very day that the bicameral body resolved disagreeing provisions of the House and Senate versions. The House panel was headed by Rep. Cynthia Villar of Las Piñas. The members are Sen. Franklin Drilon, Sen. Ralph Recto, Sen. Edgardo Angara, Sen. Sergio Osmeña 3rd, Rep. Harlin Abayon of Northern Samar, Party-list Rep. Eulogio Magsaysay, Rep. Lorenzo Tanada 3rd of Quezon, Rep. Eduardo Zialcita of Parañaque, Rep. Eduardo Veloso of Leyte, Rep. Allan Peter Cayetano of Taguig-Pateros, and Party-list Reps. Emmanuel Joel Villanueva.

The House has to ratify the same committee report before an enrolled copy is sent to President Arroyo for her signature, the last act in lawmaking.
